Theraplay (Play Therapy)
-
Theraplay's principles are based upon the theoretical approach of the attachment theory.
-
The theory is grounded on the basis that a child's first relationship is the most important one in his life and also forms the prototype for all the relationships that follow.
-
By means of Theraplay, the child is taken back to the original relationship and attempts to repair it by focusing on what happens in a healthy parent / child relationship.
-
Earlier emotions are again experienced within a loving, accepting atmosphere.
-
As the therapy progresses, the focus is less on regression and more on age appropriate activities.
-
Theraplay is a short term, structured form of play therapy, with the primary goal to promote healthy attachments, a positive self image and trust in others.
-
By means of Theraplay, focus is on the elements involved in healthy parent / child relationships, which include lots of physical contacts, playfulness and fun.
-
Parents also receive activities to do at home with their children.
-
Usually therapy takes place over a 3 month period.
